Saint Martin’s clinched the No. 5 seed into next week’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament with its 49-46 victory against Central Washington on Saturday night at Marcus Pavilion.
It’s the second consecutive season the Saints (11-15 overall) earned a postseason berth; last year, the Saints were the sixth seed at the GNAC tournament, hosted in Lacey.
The Saints face fourth-seeded Simon Fraser (14-12), which swept SMU during the regular-season, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, in Billings, Montana, and enter the tournament on a two-game winning streak.
“It was really important for the kids to have some momentum and a feeling of what it’s like to be in close, tough games,” Saints coach Tim Healy said.
Saint Martin’s sophomore forward Megan Wiedeman led all scorers with a game-high 17 points, and also had 13 rebounds.
Senior forward Liz Mills added 16 points for the Saints.
Courtney Johnson, a graduate of Kentwood High School, led the Wildcats with 16 points. Jasmine Parker added 11 points for Central Washington.
Mills’ jumper with 39 seconds to play gave the Saints a 47-46 lead to cap a 7-0 run.
