This week: Barbasol Championship, Thursday through Sunday, RTJ Trail Grand National, Opelika, Alabama.
Fourth-round score: 1-over 72.
Position: The Capital High School graduate tied for 48th at 5-under 279, 14 strokes behind winner Scott Piercy (19-under 265).
Recap: After a rough start, Gonzales battled back to even par on his round with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 13 and 14. And then on the next hole, he promptly hit the worst drive of the week so far left that it was never found. By the time he struck his first shot from the fairway at the par 4, it was his fifth shot. He made triple bogey. But at No. 16, he did come back with an eagle 3 (4-iron approach stopped 7 feet from the cup).
Never miss a local story.
Next: Gonzales is in the field for this week’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Ontario, Canada.
