This week: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Thursday through Sunday, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Pebble Beach, California.
In the field: Olympia’s Andres Gonzales, Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley, Puyallup’s Ryan Moore and University Place’s Michael Putnam.
First-round scores: Gonzales shot a 3-under-par 69 at Spyglass, Stanley had a 1-under 71 at Pebble Beach, Moore shot a 1-over 73 at Spyglass, and Putnam had a 1-over 73 at Pebble Beach.
Positions: Gonzales is tied for 29th, Stanley is tied for 64th, and Moore and Putnam are tied for 106th — all trailing leader Chez Reavie (8-under 63 at Monterey Peninsula).
Recap: Gonzales, the Capital High School graduate, recorded his lowest opening round of 2016 and is in good position to snap a string of three consecutive missed-cut showings. It helps when there are no bogeys on the scorecard. Two of his birdies came on par-3 holes, Nos. 3 and 15. … Stanley never really used his firepower to overpower Pebble Beach, but it did not get him in big trouble, either. He nearly holed out for an eagle 3 at the par-5 second hole, and he made birdie at No. 11 (15-foot putt), but he gave one shot back at the famous 17th hole (missed 2 1/2-foot putt for par). … Moore started with two early bogeys, failing to hit the green from the rough, and was at 2 over for much of his round. He made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4 and 5 to pull even, but he bogeyed two of his next three holes. … Putnam opened on the more challenging back nine at Pebble Beach and made four bogeys. His first tee shot hit the rocks to the right and ricocheted onto the beach. But he made two short putts for birdie later to salvage a decent round.
Tee times Friday: Moore at 8:22 a.m. (PST) off Monterey Peninsula No. 1, Stanley at 8:33 a.m. off Spyglass No. 10, Putnam at 8:55 a.m. off Spyglass No. 1 and Gonzales at 8:55 a.m. off Monterey Peninsula No. 10.
