  • Fast or slow tempo, Menefee gets his points

    Now, they’ve seen it all.

In its last two games, Evergreen’s men’s basketball team has seen the frenzy, run-and-gun offense of UPS. And they've seen the slow, wait-for-the-shot-clock-to-run-down offense of Lewis & Clark.

Different games. Different scores. But the same outcome.

Whether the pace is fast or slow, Nate Menefee, Evergreen’s first-team All-American guard, gets his share of points and Evergreen gets the win.

Against UPS’s manic style where everything is uptempo, Menefee feasted. He scored a conference record 57 points in a 108-97 victory, hitting on 19-of-27 shots.

Against Lewis & Clark, Menefee was again the go-to-guy and scored 20 points in a 71-44 win.

No matter what teams try to do to stop Menefee, he still gets his points. And he says he feels no pressure.

“I’m used to it,” Menefee said. “I’ve always been in the scorer’s role.”

After averaging 24 points last season, Menefee is now 139 points from becoming Evergreen’s career scoring leader. If he keeps his 50-plus clip, he’ll pass that mark in three games. With a 20-point clip, it will take him seven games. What’s certain is opponents can’t stop Menefee.

Menefee broke his own school single-game scoring record of 48 points he set last year at the NAIA Division II national tournament. This week he broke the Cascade Conference record of 55 points set by Eric Fiegi of Corban in December 2005. The conference's second highest score was 49 points by Brian Hills of Corban in 1994 and Jared Alsup of Cascade in 2003.

Menefee proved again this week he can gets his points in a half-court offense or a fastbreak getaway. He's instant offense.
