The day after practicing on the home field, the Washington Huskies went back indoors Saturday — much like at the start of fall camp Monday.
There isn’t much to detail: Players were wearing T-shirts and shorts. The pace was deliberate, almost rehearsal-like. It was done in 90 minutes, too.
Here are three takeaways from Day 6 of UW fall camp:
1. Could Lavon Coleman see time at another position? Again, the tenor of the practice Saturday was not overzealous, so it’s hard to figure out why Coleman was suddenly lining up as a pass rusher.
But, man, it is sure easy to envision the bruising running back as an effective speed rusher off the edge in certain situations.
The chiseled Coleman is up to 235 pounds, but hasn’t appeared to have lost any speed. And the way he easily got around the blocker a couple of times during the pass-protection drill opened some eyes.
He later was utilized as the gunner in a special teams drill where two defenders were trying to block him as well.
2. Still not high enough, coach: Redshirt freshman Byron Murphy is picking up where he left off in the spring.
Murphy very well could be the Huskies’ best shutdown cornerback right now, and he has not played a snap in a game.
During modified live work near the goal line, co-defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake was playing quarterback.
On a play in the flat, Lake tried lobbing a pass to his wide receiver. It still wasn’t high enough to get over Murphy, who came down with an acrobatic one-handed interception.
3. Performance tracking is a very real thing: With the players dressed down, one sight became very interesting — the strap around each man’s chest.
The way it fit, it almost looked like a sports bra. What it carries — and ultimately measures — is a monitor that records each player’s heart rate during drills.
Most of the big-time programs are using this technology now.
