Bubba Watson overpowered two-time champion Geoff Ogilvy on Friday and rolled into the quarterfinals of the Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., with a performance so dominant he has played only 43 holes in three days.
Ogilvy had little chance against Watson, who was 7 under par through 13 holes and ended up with a 6-and-4 win. Martin Kaymer of Germany, the No. 2 seed, had to rally against Hunter Mahan to reach the quarterfinals. He was 2 down with six holes remaining but won, 2 and 1.
Others advancing to the quarterfinals today included Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, who meets Luke Donald today.
GONZALES FALLS BACK
Never miss a local story.
Chris Stroud made eight straight birdies – one off the PGA Tour record – and shot a 63 to take a three-stroke lead at 11-under 131 at the Mayakoba Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Stroud birdied Nos. 9-16.
Andres Gonzales (72), of Olympia, and Kyle Stanley (71), of Gig Harbor, began the day in a four-way tie for the lead but fell back. A double bogey on the fourth hole left Gonzales 5-over-par for the round, but he rebounded with two birdies and an eagle over his next four holes, and made his first PGA Tour cut with a 4-under 138 total.
Stanley took the lead at 9-under after birdies on four of his first five holes, but a triple-bogey 7 on No. 14 took the air out of him. He finished tied for 15th, at 5-under 137.
HSBC LEAD WIDENS
Japan’s Chie Arimura made six birdies and an eagle, and shot a 6-under 66 to widen her lead at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore to two strokes.
