RAINIER - Senior guard Matt Tietjen scored 23 points, leading Rainier into the first round of the Class 1A District IV boys basketball tournament with a 55-39 victory over White Salmon in Tuesday night's play-in game.
Rainier (10-10), the No. 3 team from the Southwest Washington 1A League’s Evergreen Division, faces Ridgefield, the No. 2 seed from the Trico Division, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Chehalis.
Tietjen, who hit five 3-pointers, played the best game of his career, Mountaineers coach Josh Frunz said.
“I hope it continues into districts,” Frunz said. ‘Matt has put in the most time on his jump shot, and tonight, it really showed.”
Rainier led 42-31 after the third quarter, and Tietjen hit back-to-back 3s to start the fourth.
“The kids executed and made some plays tonight,” Frunz said. “It was a great game for the kids.”
