AUBURN - For the second time in as many games, the Olympia Bears pulled away in the fourth quarter for a win in the 4A West Central District III boys basketball tournament, all while getting another big-game performance.
The difference-maker Monday against Evergreen of Vancouver? Senior Caleb Slater.
The guard who is averaging about four points per game had a season-high 14 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, as the Bears secured the No. 5 spot into the regional round of the state tournament with a 57-51 victory over Evergreen at Auburn High School.
“He was outstanding tonight,” Olympia coach Luke Salme said of Slater, who hit three 3-pointers.
As the No. 5 seed, Olympia (21-3) will play Monroe in a loser-out game Friday at Juanita High School in Kirkland. Should Olympia win, it will face the loser of Friday’s Garfield/Kentwood game Saturday night right back at Juanita.
Olympia trailed, 45-44, going into the fourth quarter, when the Bears defense held Evergreen to 3-for-15 shooting.
Timberline 55, Wilson 52: For the third time this season, the Blazers (22-1) defeated their 3A Narrows League rival, this time, in a district seeding game.
No game details were available by press time.
As No. 3 seed, Timberline faces Shorecrest on Friday night at Bellevue College in a loser-out regional round of state game. Should the Blazers win, they’ll play the loser of Holy Names-Kennedy on Saturday night at Bellevue College.
Lakes 50, Capital 35: The Cougars (14-11), playing without starters Kendel Wilkerson and Kristyn Ross, saw their season end in a West Central District III game at Clover Park.
