Because of a lack of interest and only seven returning players, Northwest Christian High School will not have a fastpitch team this spring season.
“We didn’t have enough interest to field a team,” athletic director Jeanette Lindstrom wrote in an e-mail. “I think the girls who play will do some encouraging for others to join next year.”
Last spring, the Navigators had the program’s best season under the direction of first-year coach Tracy Leckenby. Northwest Christian was a youthful squad with 10 of its 11 players being underclassmen but won its first Pacific 2B League title and advanced to the 2B Southwest District IV tournament. Pitcher Nicole Salcedo, one of eight sophomores on the team, was named league MVP, and three others – McKall Turk, Gentry Turk and Monique Borrego – were first-team all-league players.
The 2010 season marked the fifth year of fastpitch at Northwest Christian, which opened in 1995. Leckenby resigned after last season.
Never miss a local story.
To compensate, the Pacific 2B and Coastal 1B leagues will combine to form an seven-team 2B/1B league.
