TACOMA - Only three events were contested at Wednesday’s Narrows League three-way track and field meet between Capital, Bellarmine Prep and Stadium before the wind knocked over the tent at the starting line and the rain soaked the computers, forcing officials to cancel the meet at Mount Tahoma High School.
The 3,200 and 1,600 meters and 100 hurdles took place before Capital’s boys and girls teams boarded the bus back to Olympia at around 4:30 p.m. – approximately one hour after the meet began – when meet officials canceled the meet.
“I’ve coached 21 years in Washington, and the only other time we canceled was when there was lightning and thunder at Capital,” Cougars girls coach Kevin Wright said.
Nicole Hartman, Hannah Hartman and Christine Maggie ran Narrows League-qualifying times in the 3,200 with Nicole Hartman leading the way with her 12-minute, 49-second personal-best time for the Cougars.
“All of them were over 13 (minutes) coming in,” Wright said. “In the terrible weather like that and to have PRs was nice.”
