OLYMPIA - Olympia coach Luke Salme let out a huge sigh of relief following his team's victory in the opening round of the 4A West Central District III boys basketball tournament Wednesday.
On a basketball court, Jamey Smith has always been a scorer; a shooting guard who could pop 3-pointers or drive to the hoop. However, Olympia Bears coach Luke Salme wanted to know, could he be a passer? Could he pile up points and assists?
OLYMPIA - The postgame congratulatory cheers, hugs - and even cupcakes - didn't look plausible for the Olympia Bears after the first half against Mount Tahoma on Friday night.

The Washington State Cougars signed two more football recruits from Florida than Washington this year, but coach Paul Wulff had high praise for the three Tacoma-area players who make up WSU’s in-state recruiting class for 2011.
Sarah Hartwell dominated the first half, scoring 14 of her 20 points, then got her teammates involved in the second half, leading visiting Bellarmine Prep to a convincing 55-38 victory over the Bears in Narrows League 4A action on Wednesday.

OLYMPIA - On nights when his team’s shooting isn't at its best, Olympia coach Luke Salme knows he can rely on the Bears' defense.

OLYMPIA - It's easy to overlook all the little things Olympia High's Alex Weber-Brader does on the basketball court because he's such a gifted scorer.
Alex Weber-Brader did pretty much everything for last year's junior-dominated Olympia High School boys basketball team - scoring nearly 21 points a game, while averaging eight rebounds. He earned Narrows League Bay Division MVP honors and led the Bears to the Class 4A West Central District playoffs for the first time under coach Luke Salme.
Standing 5-foot-5, Lauren Herseth seems like an unlikely candidate to be an outside hitter in volleyball.
