The U.S. team played to a 4-4 tie with the Chicago White Sox in Glendale, Ariz., on Tuesday in the first of its two exhibition games leading up to the start of the World Baseball Classic.
But it was still a losing afternoon for the Americans.
First baseman Mark Teixeira will miss the tournament after straining his right forearm while swinging in the batting cage before the game. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in Tampa, Fla., that X-rays on Teixeira’s hand and wrist area came back negative.
It was unclear who would replace him on the U.S. team.

Giancarlo Stanton drove in three runs, and Ryan Braun went 3-for-4 for the U.S., which opens pool play Friday night against Mexico.
Gordon Beckham went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the White Sox.
RED SOX’S BRITTON JAILED
Jail records say Red Sox left-hander Drake Britton was arrested in Fort Myers, Fla., on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The 23-year-old minor leaguer was arrested early Saturday morning. He was also charged with reckless driving and DUI with property damage. He posted bond later that day.
His arrest report said Britton was speeding when a deputy tried to stop him for “numerous traffic violations.” The report said Britton drove his car over a curb and knocked down a fence. He then drove over it before making a complete stop. The report said Britton admitted to the deputy he had been drinking.
The Athletics will move their spring training camp from Phoenix, where they have been since 1982, to nearby Mesa starting in 2015, agreeing to a 20-year deal. The Cubs are moving out of HohoKam Park to a new facility in Mesa next spring, and the A’s will assume control of HohoKam Park and Fitch Park after their lease with Phoenix expires in December 2014. … Albert Pujols was in the Angels’ starting lineup for the first time in spring training, about 10 days ahead of schedule following offseason knee surgery. The three-time MVP went 0-for-3 in Los Angeles’ 6-4 victory over Cincinnati. … St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is getting a second opinion on his ailing elbow today. Furcal, 35, is out indefinitely after reinjuring the elbow he hurt late last season.
