Long-time Mariners scout Ken Madeja received a Legends in Scouting Award on Saturday in Los Angeles at the 13th annual Pro Baseball Scouts Foundation dinner.
Madeja is in his 28th season with the Mariners and currently serves as a special assistant to general manager Jerry Dipoto, who attended the dinner along with several members of the club’s scouting staff.
Also honored at the dinner were Bob Engle, the Mariners’ former vice president of international operations, and former Mariners scout Duane Shaffer.
Engle received the George Genovese Lifetime Achievement Award in Scouting, while Shaffer, whose contract was not renewed after last season, received a Legends in Scouting Award.
Never miss a local story.
Madeja signed numerous notable players in his career, including pitchers J.J. Putz, Derek Lowe, Matt Thornton and John Smoltz.
The Pro Baseball Scouts Foundation lists its mission as helping "scouts who have fallen on hard time due to job loss, illness, retirement or other setbacks" by providing a financial bridge.
