Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart, a former star at Timberline High School in Lacey, has a high-ankle sprain and could miss several games, according to coach Ron Rivera.
Stewart, a fifth-year running back, was injured during the Panthers’ 30-22 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. Stewart had eight carries for 27 yards and caught two passes for 9 yards before getting hurt during the third quarter.
For the season, Stewart has rushed 93 times for 336 yards and one touchdown.
If Stewart is unable to play Sunday at Kansas City, DeAngelo Williams will start at running back, Rivera said.
Never miss a local story.
The Panthers also lost defensive tackle Ron Edwards to an injury Monday night. He suffered a dislocated left elbow and was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list on Tuesday.
EAGLES CUT EX-SEAHAWK
The Eagles released two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin, a former Seattle Seahawk, in Philadelphia’s first major roster move for a team that’s lost seven straight games.
Babin had 51/2 sacks after recording 18 last year. He signed a $28 million, five-year deal in 2011 after going to his first Pro Bowl with Tennessee following the 2010 season.
Eagles coach Andy Reid says the Eagles cut the 32-year-old Babin to give more playing time to younger players. Babin played four games for Seattle in 2007-08 and did not record a sack.
Also Tuesday, the Eagles announced that wide receiver DeSean Jackson would be put on injured reserve after he sustained multiple rib fractures during Monday night’s loss.
49ERS EXTEND BOWMAN
The San Francisco 49ers and inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman agreed to a five-year, $45.25 million contract extension through the 2018 season.
With Bowman’s new deal, it keeps one of the best and most-feared linebacking tandems in the NFL together for the long haul — fellow inside linebacker Patrick Willis is signed through 2016.
The 24-year-old Bowman was a third-round draft pick in 2010 out of Penn State.
