The Green Bay Packers lost starting left tackle Bryan Bulaga for the season and added veteran quarterback Vince Young.
The team confirmed Monday that Bulaga is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Bulaga was injured during practice Saturday.
A first-round draft pick in 2010, Bulaga was moved from right tackle to the left side this offseason as part of the Packers’ revamping of the line to better protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was sacked a league-high 51 times last season.
Coach Mike McCarthy also moved Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton from right guard to left guard, T.J. Lang from left guard to right guard and Marshall Newhouse, who started 28 games the past two seasons at left tackle, to right tackle.
Never miss a local story.
The Packers would appear to have two options at left tackle: They could move Newhouse back to left tackle, or they could insert fourth-round pick David Bakhtiari there. Bakhtiari was impressive during the first week of practices in pads, competing at right tackle with Newhouse and Don Barclay.
Injuries have caused Bulaga to miss 11 games over the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, Young signed a one-year deal with the Packers after a workout for the team Monday morning, according to ESPN.
Young, the third overall pick in 2006 by the Tennessee Titans and a two-time Pro Bowl player, last played in the NFL in 2011 with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 30-year-old was cut by the Buffalo Bills in training camp last year.
Green Bay had been looking for depth at quarterback. Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman had been behind Rodgers on the depth chart.
SURGERY FOR 49ERS’ WILLIS
San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis had surgery to repair his fractured right hand, ESPN reported.
Willis is expected to return in about three weeks. That means he will be ready before the 49ers open the season against the Packers on Sept. 8. The 49ers play at Seattle in Week 2.
Willis sustained the injury Wednesday while going against fullback Bruce Miller during a one-on-one pass-rush drill.
Willis has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first six seasons and has been an Associated Press first-team All-Pro five times. He had 88 tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions to anchor San Francisco’s stout defense last season.
