For Los Angeles goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, it was a perfect 10: facing 10 shots on goal and turning away every one. He was honored as Major League Soccer player of the week for his efforts.
And to hear the Seattle Sounders tell it, it was a pretty good 10 for them, too: seeing those on-target shots as indication that their attack was dangerous even if it didn’t show on the scoreboard of their 1-0 loss Sunday.
Here’s a review of those 10 Seattle shots on goal, with the chance and the save rated on a 1-to-10 scale:
8:44 by Lamar Neagle: Osvaldo Alonso sends a ball to the penalty spot, where Neagle heads it on target and with good pace. Penedo deflects it over the bar with his right hand. This save was nominated for MLS save of the week. Chance: 9. Save: 9.
Never miss a local story.
9:16 by Chad Marshall: Marco Pappa sends a corner kick about 10 yards in front of the far post, where Marshall out-jumps two defenders and sends the header down and on goal, although Penedo needs only a step and a quick punch to save it. Neagle can’t quite make contact in trying to bicycle kick the rebound back to the goal. Chance: 8. Save: 6.
13:52 by Obafemi Martins: Brad Evans heads down an interception in the Galaxy’s attacking half, starting a quick Seattle counter from Neagle to Martins. Martins tries a move at the top of the box, but the touch is light and he attempts a weak shot which Penedo goes down and grabs with both hands. Chance: 9. Save: 2.
20:58 by Neagle: The Sounders work the ball into the box, but can’t find a way to goal. They regroup with a pass outside to Dylan Remick, who sends a cross six yards in front of the goal. Neagle out-jumps his defender and makes good contact, but only a couple of feet from Penedo, who bats the ball wide. Chance: 8. Save: 6.
21:11 by Neagle: After that save, L.A. fails to get the ball out of its end. Andy Rose steals it and touches it ahead to Neagle, who hits a low left-footer directly at Penedo. Chance: 5. Save: 2.
34:21 by Neagle: Now down a goal, the Sounders counter up the middle of the pitch, with Rose again steering the final pass to Neagle. This time, Neagle cuts behind a defender and makes good contact from the top of the penalty area. However, the ball is located near Penedo’s right shoulder, and he makes the two-handed stop. Chance: 7. Save: 4.
52:20 by Andy Rose: Neagle takes the ball down the right side of the box, where about three yards from the end line he crosses to Rose, who runs onto the ball and whacks it from about four yards out directly into Penedo, just off the line at the near post. Chance: 9. Save: 2.
55:42 by Neagle: Tyrone Mears chips a ball over the Galaxy defense. Neagle gets to it behind his defender at a top corner of the area. He takes one touch and then shoots low to the near post, where Penedo goes down and stops it with his left hand. Chance: 7. Save: 3.
72:28 by Martins: Martins gets control after a long kick by goalkeeper Stefan Frei, sending the ball wide to Pappa. He returns it to Martins at the penalty arc, where Martins turns and fires directly into Penedo’s chest. Chance: 4. Save: 1.
86:18 by Aaron Kovar: The Galaxy loses possession at midfield, and the Sounders turn it around quickly from Pappa to Martins to Chad Barrett and finally on to Aaron Kovar in space inside the area. Kovar seems to have trouble tapping the ball into shooting position, and by the time he pulls the trigger, Penedo is upon him. Chance: 8. Save: 2.
