Former Utah exec is Sonics’ new assistant GM

SEATTLE — Former Utah Jazz player personnel director Troy Weaver is the new assistant general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics.

Sonics general manager Sam Presti made the announcement Thursday. Weaver will replace Scott Perry. Perry spent one season with Seattle before recently returning to the Detroit Pistons to be their vice president of basketball operations.

Weaver was with the Jazz for four seasons. He spent the first three years there as the team’s head scout.

“Troy comes from a very successful organization in Utah,” Presti said in a team statement. “He has a terrific array of personnel and coaching experience that will positively impact what we are trying to build here with the SuperSonics.”

The team said Weaver will work alongside current assistant general manager Rich Cho, who is entering his 11th season with the Sonics and is the team’s salary cap specialist.

Before Utah, Weaver was an assistant coach at Syracuse. He recruited Carmelo Anthony, who led Syracuse to the NCAA national championship in 2003. Weaver was also an assistant at New Mexico for one season and at Pittsburgh for three years.
