The Olympian
GIG HARBOR – In what Olympia coach Denny Bailey often refers to as "the battle for second place" in 4A Narrows League boys tennis, the Olympia Bears came up short by losing both singles matches and dropping a 3-2 decision against Gig Harbor.
However, senior Trevor Wilson and junior Reuben Talukdar showcased their skills as the second doubles pair with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win, leaving them undefeated after already winning against perennial top seed Bellarmine Prep.
"Trevor and Reuben are going to have to work on consistency," Bailey said of the pair which have no district playoff experience. "They could get as high as the third seed (for district playoffs)."
Seniors Cameron Williams and Ian Lindgren knocked out their Gig Harbor opponents in two sets.
TENINO 3, WINLOCK 1
Junior Adelle Love had 16 kills and two blocks in Tenino's Class 1A Evergreen Division victory.
"We had streaks where the team played well and had intensity," Tenino coach Patti Blanford said.
CENTRALIA 3, HOQUIAM 1
Senior Jonika McMillan gave a triumphant performance with 20 kills, 16 digs and three aces serving in Centralia's 2A Evergreen win.
"Jonika had a career-high in kills," Tigers coach Neil Sharp said. "She keeps getting better. She had a great defensive game as well."
Centralia lost the first game 25-23 but recovered quickly.
"Hoquiam was scrappy defensively," Sharp said. "Luckily, we were able to perservere and get the win."
BLACK HILLS 3, ELMA 0
Junior Kailah Lenz had 11 kills and 11 aces serving as Black Hills swept its 2A Evergreen foe in two sets. Lenz also had four digs.
Black Hills rose to 5-0 in league play, 9-3 overall including tournament play.
OLYMPIA 3, LINCOLN 0
Nicole Mertens had 10 kills, and Michelle Woodward added eight kills, eight digs and was 15 of 16 with three aces serving, as the Bears (4-1, 2-0) eased past a weak Lincoln team in a Narrows League match
TUMWATER 3, RIVER RIDGE 0
Amanda Warner and Cara Olden both had eight kills and Katrina McClaflin had 15 digs, helping keep Tumwater undefeated after five matches.
