BUCKLEY – Yelm picked an exciting way to claim an early-season boys basketball victory.
Yelm overcame a 30-21 halftime deficit and eked out a buzzer-beating 43-42 victory over White River on Tuesday night off senior captain Zac Farino's 3-pointer from three feet behind the line.
"(The Hornets from White River) were hitting 3-point shots. We reminded our guys to rotate (defensive assignments)," Yelm assistant coach Dan Helms said.
The Tornados then held White River to six points each quarter in the second half.
Skyler Stillwell led Yelm with 11 points.
"I think we'll be competitive this season," Helms said.
TUMWATER 71, FIFE 61
Jumping out to an 18-4 first-quarter lead, Tumwater survived Fife's rally to pull out a win in Curtis Medved's first game as the Thunderbirds coach.
"It was a pleasant start," Medved said. "It's nice to get a win when you know you've got a lot to work on. Well learn a lot from this."
Dan DeVries led Tumwater with 16 points.
Fife exploded for 26 points in the second quarter and led late in the quarter. But Tumwater led 31-30 at halftime.
"We like to play quick," Medved said.
NORTH THURSTON 62, BONNEY LAKE 38
North Thurston center Peter Kalman and guard Drew Reid, both seniors, each scored 12 points behind Alex Tucker's 17 points to win the Rams nonleague opener.
The Rams outscored Bonney Lake by nine points in the first and fourth quarters.
CAPITAL 70, AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW 49
Colin Bossio scored 22 points and Taylor Ross had 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars got rolling in the second half and cruised in their season opener at home.
Capital, ahead 23-21 at halftime, outscored Auburn Mountainview 23-12 in third quarter to pull away.
"We really started to move the ball a little better in the second half," Capital coach Doug Galloway said. "In the first game, you're trying to work through a lot of stuff.
"You're practicing against your own kids. It's a different feel in a game."
CLOVER PARK 53, TIMBERLINE 40
Sophomore guard Tana Pritchard scored 21 points as the Warriors beat the Blazers at The Evergreen State College.
Timberline is playing its home games at Evergreen this month until remodeling of its gym is completed.
Kole Podowicz led Timberline with 16 points. The Blazers shot 11 of 50 from the field in the foreign gym.
LIFE CENTER 62, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 53
Trailing 27-19 at halftime, Northwest Christian never took the lead in the second half.
"We dug ourselves a hole early," Northwest Christian coach Ed McClanahan said. "We couldn't get any going offensively."
Robbie Groeschell led Northwest Christian with 18 points.
