If you need a good excuse to clean out your closets and cupboards, Senior Services for South Sound has one: its annual fall rummage sale.
The sale, one of two a year, is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lacey Senior Center. The sale raises about $1,200 that supports the center's activities program. That program includes health and wellness classes, exercise classes, and clubs supporting a variety of hobbies, including watercolor painting, Spanish, woodcarving and knitting.
"It means a lot. It allows us to do more of what we're doing," said Activities Director Chris Quimby of the rummage sale. "It's really important that we offer classes that people can benefit from, that help people feel uplifted."
Proceeds from the sales, plus an annual plant sale and other fundraisers, also go into a scholarship fund that helps low-income seniors purchase an annual membership to the center or pay the registration fees for classes.
"We have seen an increase in folks needing this assistance, and our policy is to not turn anyone away due to lack of funds," Quimby said.
The week before the sale, the lobby of the Lacey center starts to fill with boxes and bags of donated items. Volunteers sort and price the items before the sale, and any leftover items are donated to local charities.
Both donators and shoppers will know they are supporting a good cause, Quimby said. Participating in the event, he said, "would be a wonderful opportunity for people to get introduced to the senior centers and see what we're all about."
The Olympia Senior Center operates a boutique from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, and donations of clothing in good condition, small household items, DVDs, CDs and books (but no manuals) are always needed.
To help with the Lacey rummage sale, donate the following between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday at the Lacey Senior Center, 6757 Pacific Ave. S.E.:
• Winter coats
• Clothing
• Household appliances
• Toys
• Books
• Games
• Small furniture
• Kitchen items, including complete dish sets
The center will not accept: large furniture items and electronics, including televisions and computers. Unsold electronics cost the center money to recycle them.
