Welcome to the fall arts season

Welcome to the fall arts season.

Your usual Weekend section has taken on a bigger mission this week.

Let me introduce The Olympian's second Fall Arts & Entertainment Guide.

For this week only, we've taken the section that is usually dedicated to helping you find fun, interesting and enlightening things to do THIS weekend and converted it to a much more far-reaching planning tool.

The reason: While New Year's is in January, September is the month when the world of arts and entertainment gets a fresh start - and so do most of us. Children return to school. The weather starts to turn (although it's harder to tell this year with the Summer That Wasn't). And our entertainment options evolve from outdoor festivals and games to indoor concerts and shows.

So the time is right for a special edition focusing on the South Sound theater and music seasons, most of which are just about to begin.

Space is limited - and the offerings seem almost unlimited - so we have written articles only about the biggest local groups and venues that offer a series of events. But we also have created a four-page pullout center section that lists smaller groups' schedules, as well as some of the big seasons planned in Tacoma and Seattle, because South Sound residents frequently travel to quench their thirst for great entertainment.

As you read through the section, keep your calendar handy so you can plan for the events you want to see. And let us know what you think about the section so we can make improvements next year.

If you are still looking for things to do THIS weekend, don't worry. You'll find some of Weekend's regular features - including the Planner - near the back of the section.
