Weekend getaway: Walk Puyallup

What: Puyallup Parks and Recreation and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department have developed a walking guide to Puyallup called "Walk the Valley."

The pamphlet offers five routes ranging from 0.9 to 2.6 miles and outlines routes for connecting the loops for longer walks.

The routes offer attractions ranging from a stroll past the Meeker Mansion to views of the Puyallup River from the Riverfront Trail.

When: Anytime.

Where: Downtown Puyallup.

Getting there: Follow River Road from Interstate 5 in Tacoma to Puyallup. There are various places to start your walk, including Pioneer Park, the fairgrounds, Clarks Creek Park or the Kmart parking lot near the Riverfront Trail.

History: The organizations say the purpose of “Walk the Valley” is to promote walking as healthful living and a way to “build strong communities and reduce traffic congestions and pollution.”

Activities: The routes in the walking guide go past various locations for additional recreation such as parks, playing field, the Clarks Creek off-leash dog park and circuit training trail, playgrounds and tennis courts.
