Volunteer opportunities for July 14

HeartStrides is a nonprofit therapeutic horsemanship program located off of Littlerock Road, in Tuwater. We offer therapeutic riding and horsemanship opportunities to all ages and abilities. We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as side walkers, note takers, and to assist with fundraising efforts. Dispute Resolution Center has occasional need for volunteers to help with bulk mailings for roughly two hours at a time. Duties include folding and applying address labels. We have mailing “parties” and provide snacks. Join our congenial group!” Call the center, at 360-956-1155.

Loving Hearts needs hands is a crochet and knit group making items for charities, including babies, cancer patients undergoing chemo-therapy, and men and women in shelters. We need more people willing to knit and crochet. We meet from 12:30-2:30 p.m., on the third and fourth Mondays of each Monday, at Yards of Yarn, 1800 Olympic Highway S, Shelton. YWCA of Olympia needs volunteers to fill the following openings: office volunteers for four-hour shifts; and volunteers to stock the shelves of The Other Bank on Tuesdays. In addition, the YWCA always accepts donations of hygiene items such as shampoo and dish soap. Call Bree Lafreniere at 360-352-0593 to volunteer or donate.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office needs volunteers for helping with vacation house checks, business checks, handicap parking violations, iris scan, traffic control at special events, speaking engagements, multihousing/block watch, and other duties as assigned. Each volunteer must complete the two-week volunteer academy, a field training program, and probation status. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have the ability to volunteer for four hours per week, have a valid Washington driver’s license, no criminal history, and a certificate of good health from their doctor. To apply, contact Lt. John Price, and fill out a volunteer application returning it with proper picture ID to the Sheriff’s Office, at 2000 Lakeridge Ave. SW, Olympia. The American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter needs volunteers to support military service members and military families with emergency communications and casework services. Call 360-352-8575.

The North Olympia Fire Department needs volunteers to create websites, maintain vehicles, promote life safety education or work with teen fire cadets. Contact Lt. Derek Hall at 360-705-0234 or hall@northolympiafire.com.

Friend to Friend needs volunteers to visit with residents in nursing, assisted-living and retirement homes throughout Thurston County. Call 888-383-7818.

The South Sound Estuarium marine life discovery center needs more volunteers to help staff the center at 608 Washington St. N.E. Volunteers can sign up for three-hour shifts either 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays. For more information contact Lisa Anderson at andersolis@cwu.EDU.
