For the fifth year, Metro Parks Tacoma and Ducks Unlimited are again sponsoring the Point Defiance Salmon Derby set for Saturday. The first place prize for the biggest salmon caught will be $1,500.
Last year’s event attracted more than 100 anglers. The top prize went to Ward Rogers from Edgewood who caught a 27-pound, 13-ounce chinook.
In addition to the derby, the event also features a free trout pond for children from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is held at the Point Defiance Marina Boathouse.
Tickets for the derby are $25 per angler. Tickets are available online at pointdefiancesalmonderby.org or at the boathouse.

If you want to increase the pot you could take home, you can take part in the Puget Sound Anglers South King County Chapter eighth annual salmon derby also being held Saturday. That derby is offering a $3,000 first prize.
The South King County derby is part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series. Participants in the series also are entered in a drawing for a fishing boat at the end of the series.
