Fort Lewis soldier killed in Baghdad on Sunday

FORT LEWIS - A 22-year-old Fort Lewis Stryker soldier was killed in action Sunday in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Cpl. Victor A. Garcia of Rialto, Calif., died Sunday in Baghdad after he was hit by enemy small arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, according to the defense department.

Garcia enlisted in November 2004, and completed his training at Fort Knox, Ky. He reported to Fort Lewis in April 2005, and was assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

In January, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, which deployed to Iraq in April with the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry. Garcia's death is the 15th in the brigade since the unit arrived in Iraq in early May.

Garcia is the 137th Fort Lewis-based service member to die in the war.
