Teen bike rider hurt in crash with pickup

A Yelm teen was injured Thursday evening when he was struck by a pickup while riding his bicycle, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Codey A. Alhammad, 14, was riding west on the eastbound shoulder of state Route 702, according to the State Patrol. He was struck by a 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by Owen J. Kortright, 38, of Spanaway.

Alhammad, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was taken to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma with injuries. Kortright was not injured; his pickup sustained about $1,000 worth of damage.

The cause of the crash is listed as failure to yield the right of way and improper lane travel on Alhammad’s part. No charges will be filed.
