Two friends fishing at Banks Lake apparently got into a friendly wrestling match and one ended up dead.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of Anatoliy P. Mitskavich, 41, of Auburn. No arrests have been made. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to determine how he died.
Undersheriff John Turley said the men had been camping with other family members at Spokane Falls when they decided on Saturday to go fishing at Banks Lake in northern Grant County.
The incident was reported to emergency dispatchers just before 4 a.m. Sunday. Turley said the Coulee City Marshal responded to the scene and found one man dead. The Sheriff’s Office was then called to investigate.
Turley said three men were drinking heavily after fishing earlier in the day. At some point, one of them challenged another to a wrestling match. Both of the men were ex-Russian military members, Turley said.
While they were wrestling, one of the men stopped breathing. The surviving man and the third man, who witnessed the incident, called 911.
"It was really just a wrestling match," Turley said. "But they were highly intoxicated."
Turley said no weapons were involved.
He said the second man in the fight, a 46-year-old from Auburn, was questioned by investigators and released. He said the man has no criminal history. He said investigators will await the results of the autopsy to determine whether he will be arrested.
