Police officer fatally shoots Bremerton man during traffic stop

Silverdale - A 23-year-old Bremerton man was fatally shot during a DUI traffic stop Friday night, the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office reported. The shooting occurred at 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Timberland Bank, 2401 N.W. Bucklin Hill Road, in Silverdale.

Police told KIRO-TV that after being pulled over, the driver reached into the passenger seat, sparking a violent struggle with the Poulsbo officer.

The officer, a five-year veteran and member of the Kitsap County DUI Task Force, was not injured. A Navy petty officer who was riding with him as an observer was also not hurt.

Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue engine and medic units responded to the scene. The driver was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton where he died a short time later.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Kitsap County Sheriff Steve Boyer told KIRO-TV that the officer will be placed on administrative assignment until the investigation is complete.
