Auburn man dies after suffering medical event in King County jail

King County corrections officials were reviewing the death of a 55-year-old Auburn man who had a medical emergency while at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent earlier this week.

Ronald Smail died early Thursday at Valley Medical Center in Renton, the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention reported.

Smail had been booked into the King County Jail on Saturday, then transferred Sunday to the Regional Justice Center, the department reported. He had a medical emergency early Tuesday. Staff and paramedics continued response efforts while Smail was taken to Valley Medical Center.

Smail had been held on charges from Upper Kittitas County District Court. Those charges were dropped after his medical emergency, the King County department reported.

"As is standard procedure, determination of the cause and manner of death is under investigation by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office," the department reported. "As part of the standard review process for jail-related deaths, the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention will also work with Public Health - Seattle & King County to conduct an investigation of actions during Smail’s time in custody."
