No classes; striking Ferndale teachers picket

FERNDALE, Wash. – Striking Ferndale teachers hit the picket line instead of the classroom Wednesday on what would have been the first day of school.

Ferndale Education Association President Tracie Morris says the sticking point is more planning time for teachers.

Superintendent Linda Quinn says giving teachers the added time they want would require hiring four more teachers at a total cost of about $400,000 a year.

The Ferndale School District has about 300 teachers for 5,000 students at 11 schools.
