Spokane Valley officer kills man in confrontation

A Spokane Valley police officer shot and killed a man armed with a knife.

Officers had responded to a report of a fight Sunday night among roommates at a halfway house where a man in his 50s had left the home with a knife.

Spokane police spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe told KXLY-TV the man was shot when he did not respond to the officer's order to drop the knife. He was taken to Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Spokane Valley officers are sheriff's deputies under contract. The shooting is being investigated by a team of detectives from multiple agencies.

The Spokesman-Review reports this is the fourth police shooting in the Spokane area since Aug. 25.
