South Kitap woman killed after tree crashes into house

A South Kitsap woman was killed early Tuesday morning after an old-growth Douglas fir tree crashed into her manufactured home in the 10300 block of S.E. Olympiad Drive.

Kitsap County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Scott Wilson said the 55-year-old woman was identified as Diane M. Walker. Her 27-year-old son and a family friend also in the home were not hurt.

South Kitsap Fire & Rescue personnel responded to calls of a large tree falling into a residence around 12:30 a.m. in the Harper area of South Kitsap, near the Southworth Ferry Terminal. Heavy rain and high wind gusts were reported in the area at the time.

Emergency crews were blocked from entering the bedroom because of the immense size of the fir. Bethel Towing and Kitsap County Public Works assisted in removing the tree and debris. The victim was declared dead at the scene. The mobile home was heavily damaged in the incident.

The Kitsap County Coroner will perform an autopsy. The woman’s death is not believed to be suspicious.
