Kennewick man jailed after Richland park attack

RICHLAND - A Kennewick man is in jail after an alert Richland resident helped a woman being raped in Claybell Park.

The citizen, who was not identified, was walking near the park in Richland when the resident heard struggling and a woman screaming, said Richland police.

The person called 911 and contacted neighbors, who also called 911. The person then returned to the park area and found a nude woman coming out of the heavy foliage near a creek, said police.

The resident took the woman to the neighbors and awaited police.

Officers found an empty vehicle that had crashed into a construction area and John A. Magana, 29, lying on the ground nearby.

Magana was booked into the Benton County jail on investigation of first-degree rape, DUI, hit and run, possession of marijuana, suspected cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
