Loss of rental beds forces 33 Yakima jail layoffs

The Yakima County Jail is laying off 33 workers after losing contracts to house inmates from cities in King County.

The Yakima Herald reports that jail officials learned this week they're losing about $6 million when the contracts expire Friday. County Corrections Director Ed Campbell says he knew the cities were pulling out, but it was unexpected that they were going to pull out so many inmates so quickly.

Westside cities now have more options because fewer inmates are being incarcerated while at the same time, more jail space has been built or is under construction.

The layoffs are effective Jan. 31. The job losses include 29 corrections officers, four office workers and another five unfilled corrections officer positions.
