An apparent confrontation on a Lakewood street Sunday evening led to the city’s first homicide in more than a year.
Police Lt. Chris Lawler said in a news release issued Monday that officers responded to a call of shots fired with a man down in the 5500 block of Chicago Avenue Southwest about 8:35 p.m.
They found Lenard Masten, 39, with a gunshot wound lying on the sidewalk of an apartment complex. He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where he died.
Witnesses told police Masten was approached by two men shortly before gunshots rang out.
Detectives interviewed people and pursued leads Monday, Lawler said.
Lakewood had no homicides in 2010.
