A worker at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma has been charged with smuggling drugs to people detained at the facility.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that Larry Joe Heath Jr. has been charged by federal prosecutors with one count of distribution of cocaine. Court records show he received money in exchange for the drugs.
The detention center houses people suspected of being in the U.S. illegally and other immigration violations.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lorie Dankers said Heath is not a federal employee and referred questions to private contractor GEO Group Inc. Efforts by the newspaper to reach GEO Group were unsuccessful Friday.
