BELLINGHAM - A 22-year-old Ferndale man was booked into Whatcom County Jail Wednesday, Feb. 23, after he allegedly told police he put a homemade bomb at the front door of a man who was dating his ex-girlfriend.
Andris V. Derkach turned himself into Bellingham Police and was booked for investigation of malicious placement of an explosive device, domestic violence and malicious mischief.
Shortly after midnight Feb. 10, Derkach allegedly put the bomb at the front door of a 19-year-old man who lived in an apartment in the 800 block of 32nd Street, Bellingham Police spokesman Mark Young said. Derkach's ex-girlfriend, 21, was inside the apartment as well.
The bomb wasn't flammable and didn't contain gunpowder. It consisted of a chemical mixture inside a plastic soda bottle; the chemicals expanded until the container could no longer hold them, causing an explosion, Young said.
The explosion produced a loud boom but caused minimal damage to the front door, he said.
Derkach allegedly broke up with his girlfriend in September 2010; soon after she began dating the other man. Since October, the 19-year-old's tires have been slashed and nails put in them, Young said.
Derkach allegedly admitted to creating the bomb and causing the vehicle damage when he spoke to Bellingham Police detectives last week.
