A man who reportedly attacked a Whatcom County sheriff's deputy with a hammer was shot and killed near a home on Clay Road northeast of Lynden Monday morning, Feb. 28.
Deputies and Border Patrol agents went to the home in the 9200 block of Clay about 9:35 a.m. after someone reported a 30-year-old man was breaking out windows in the home. When confronted, the man reportedly hit a deputy in the head with a hammer.
The man was then shot, thought it was not immediately clear which agency’s officer shot the suspect or how many shots were fired, Undersheriff Jeff Parks said.
Those on scene performed CPR on the suspect, but he was pronounced dead there. His name was not immediately available.The deputy was wounded but survived.

"He's conscious and talking," said Parks of the deputy, who was taken to St. Joseph hospital for treatment. The wounded officer's identity was not released.
The area, between Badger and Pangborn roads, east of Northwood Road, is mostly farmland.
Responding deputies shut down Clay Road and were diverting all traffic during the investigation.
