A former Stafford Creek prison corrections officer has been sentenced to a month in jail for hiring someone to steal his car so he could file a fake insurance claim.
The Daily World reports Keith A. Johnson pleaded guilty to theft in an agreement with the prosecutor who dropped a charge of filing a false claim.
Court records say Johnson talked to a prison inmate in 2009 about setting up the theft. The car was taken from a Tacoma parking lot and burned. Johnson filed an insurance claim for more than $15,000.
At the sentencing Monday, Grays Harbor Superior Court Judge Gordon Godfrey told Johnson, "If dumb was a crime, you'd be serving life."
