Tacoma firefighters are battling flames at the iconic Pagoda structure inside Point Defiance Park.
"It's been a substantial fire," Tacoma fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.
Crews were called to the building at 4:25 a.m. The fire inside the Pagoda was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing more fire crews to the scene, at 4:45 a.m.
The fire has been problematic to fight, the department reported.
"We are still fighting the fire," Meinecke said at 5:45 a.m.
No injuries have been reported and a cause of the blaze is not yet known.
The Pagoda is the centerpiece of the park's Japanese Garden. It's a replica of a 17th century Japanese Lodge and has hosted weddings, memorial services, meetings and parties for years. The building includes a kitchen.
