A 95-year-old woman died in a house fire early this morning in the 3100 block of South Bay Road N.E., a Thurston County Sheriff's sergeant said today.
Although it appears Lena Faye Hershey of Olympia died from smoke inhalation, an autopsy is still set for Monday morning, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said.
According to the sheriff's office:
The woman's son, Robert J. Hershey, heard a "bumping" sound upstairs in the house about 7 a.m. today, then emerged from his room to find the kitchen "overtaken by flames," Sgt. Tim Rudloff said. The man exited a back door and ran to his neighbors for help, then tried to re-enter the house from the front door but "there was too much smoke and fire to make any kind of entry," Rudloff said.
The fire is under investigation.
