Man injured in accidental shooting in Lakewood, police say

A 24-year-old man was seriously injured Sunday afternoon in an accidental shooting at his buddy's Lakewood apartment.

The man and his 24-year-old friend were hanging out at the friend's apartment in the 11400 block of 105th Street Southwest and looking at one of the friend's guns, Lakewood police Lt. Chris Lawler said.

The friend didn't think the gun was loaded and fired it. The gun was loaded, however. A bullet struck the man in the chest, Lawler said.

Paramedics took the injured man to Madigan Army Medical Center for treatment. According to initial reports, the man was recovering from his injury.

Both men are active-duty military. Lakewood police took the weapons at the house. The gun that was fired was the friend's personal weapon, Lawler said.

The shooting appeared accidental. Alcohol was not a factor. Nonetheless, Lakewood police will forward the investigation to the Pierce County Prosecutor's Office for review, Lawler said.
