Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna has reached a settlement with Bellevue's Intelius that could result in some customers of the company's identity theft protection service getting a refund.
McKenna contended that Intelius unknowingly signed up hundreds of customers for identity theft services who never used it after they did background checks with the company.
After customers bought background checks on the Internet, they were asked to click through several screens of information that, unknown to many of them, obligated them to pay for identity theft services on a monthly basis.
Intelius will be contacting eligible customers in the next few months offering them refunds. The company didn’t admit any wrongdoing in reaching the agreement.
