Construction will close the Ruston tunnel again beginning Monday, said a contractor making sewer improvements near the tunnel.
Olson Bros. Excavating said the tunnel will close beginning at 7 a.m. Monday. The tunnel will be closed through 5 p.m. Sept. 3. Detour signs will direct traffic to use alternate routes around the construction site at Point Ruston along the Ruston Way waterfront.
The tunnel was closed twice last winter for similar construction. The tunnel, built to carry traffic under a portion of the old Asarco copper smelter, eventually will be filled with lightly contaminated soil from the old smelter site.
A new boulevard will carry traffic through the billion-dollar Point Ruston development after the tunnel is permanently closed.
