10 crews set to clean up 100 miles of beaches

The 12th biannual Beach Cleanup in South Sound is set for Oct. 20.

The twice-yearly project coordinated by the Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association covers some 100 miles of beach in Eld, Budd, Totten, Henderson, Hammersley, Case and Carr inlets; Squaxin, Hope, Harstine and Anderson islands; and Oakland Bay.

The 10 crews include volunteers from commercial shellfish companies, the Squaxin Island and Nisqually tribes, the state Department of Natural Resources, Henderson Inlet Community Shellfish Farm and Pacific Shellfish Institute.

In the past six years, crews have reported recovering 674 cubic yards of debris, with Styrofoam and tires the most common items.

To report areas with marine debris or to request that cleanup crews stay off your beach, call 1-800-964-6532.
