Airlines' fare hike likely to stand

A wide-ranging fare increase initiated by American Airlines early this week has been copied by most major domestic carriers, giving the fare hike a good chance of surviving, say airline analysts.

The relatively modest hike of $5 each way for trips over 500 miles and $3 for shorter trips is the first broad hike in months for domestic airlines.

In this latest hike, Continental, Delta, United, US Airways, Virgin America, Alaska, Frontier and Southwest have all followed American’s lead, according to   CEO Rick Seaney.
