Soldier killed as enemy fires on Stryker unit

FORT LEWIS - A Stryker brigade soldier died in Iraq when his unit was hit with enemy fire, the Pentagon said Saturday.

Sgt. Iosiwo Uruo, 27, of Agana Heights, Guam, died Thursday when his unit encountered small arms enemy fire in Buhriz, about 40 miles north of Baghdad and just south of Baqouba.

Uruo was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. He joined the Army in January 2001 as a cavalry scout. He served at Fort Knox, Ky., and Camp Casey, Korea, and was most recently based at Fort Lewis.

His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, Korean Defense Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Fifteen soldiers based at Fort Lewis have died in May, making it the deadliest month of the Iraq War for troops from the Army post.
