THURSTON COUNTY: Dive team pulls unoccupied car from river

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office dive team fished out a car in the Nisqually River on Sunday afternoon.

A Fort Lewis soldier fishing in the Yelm area spotted the car and notified law enforcement on the Army post.

The post police called for a tow truck and sought assistance from the dive team about 5 p.m.

No one was in the 1999 Audi A4 Quattro. The car had extensive front-end damage and was stripped of most of its items, said Lt. Chris Mealy, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

The car was registered to a Fort Lewis soldier and hadn’t been reported stolen, he said. Mealy said it’s possible the car was stolen while the owner was deployed.
