GRAND MOUND: Driver who pulled in front of traffic sought

Two people died Monday in a hit-and-run crash on state Route 12 near Grand Mound, according to the State Patrol.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., Derrick L. Filby, 33, of Rochester was westbound in his 1986 Toyota MR 2 on state Route 12. A pickup truck was stopped at Pecan Street near Grand Mound and pulled out in front of Filby onto the highway. Filby attempted to stop and swerved left into oncoming traffic, hitting a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 60-year-old Calvin E. Mason of Prineville, Ore. The driver of the pickup truck did not stop, according to a State Patrol report.

Filby and a passenger in the PT Cruiser, 35-year-old Michelle R. Jordan of Prineville, died.

A passenger in Filby’s vehicle, Jody J. Fletcher, 29, of Centralia, was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the PT Cruiser was transported with minor injuries to Centralia Providence Hospital. The other two passengers in the PT Cruiser – Joyce F. Mason, 57, of Prineville, and Ashlynne M. Mason, 15, of Bend, Ore. – were transported to Centralia Providence with minor injuries.

The roadway was closed for about three hours.

Detectives are asking for any witnesses or anyone who has any information on the running truck to call the State Patrol at 360-586-1999.
