Deputy who died after collision with an elk identified

The Lewis County sheriff’s deputy who died Tuesday night of injuries after his patrol cruiser hit an elk has been identified at Stephen “Mike” Gallagher, 34, of Adna.

He had been taken by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the crash Monday night. He was on his way to back up another officer when he hit the elk on U.S. Highway 12.

Gallagher had worked for the sheriff’s office for six years. He was an Army veteran who served in Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti and Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo.

He was married and leaves two young children.
